Lately I have been nostgalic for my childhood (ages 3-12 from 1995-2004), and my teen years (ages 13-19 from 2005-2011). I have so many memories from those eras, including memories of my first website/blog in 2006. One good thing about the mid 2000s is that I used to take pictures of everything. I had a pink digital camera (remember those?), and I loved using it. I'm glad that I took so many pictures back then to document my life, because I came across these photos recently and I was reminded of all the typical 2000s things I was into at the time.
1. It is difficult to see, but this picture of my closet reminded me of my 2000s wardrobe. That black sweater with colorful dots was one of my favorite pieces of clothing from back then.
2. My pink hair straightener! Having pin straight hair was in style at that time. My poor hair was damaged from all the heat, haha.
3. The makeup products I used! I still use the same liquid eyeliner, but none of the other products. Its wild how much my makeup has changed since then.
4. My iconic pink Razr flip phone that I 'blinged' out with gems. This was my first phone.
5. My Playboy Bunny purse. I actually had another one that was white with a black bunny logo too. Does anyone remember the show The Girls Next Door?
6. Zebra print... everything. I loved zebra print so much. Zebra print and pink was an iconic duo, but I thought I was unique by matching zebra print with lime green, haha. In the mid 2000s, you were either a cheetah print or zebra print girl.
7. My pink iPod shuffle. I grew up mostly poor, so my family couldn't afford an expensive iPod. They got me the cheapest one, but I was so thrilled! It only held 50 songs, so I would switch them out each week.
8. My black bag with colorful hearts. I purchased this bag because it was the closest thing I could find and afford that resembled the iconic Louis Vuitton black multicolor monogram bags.
9. My belly button piercing. I got this done with my friend when I was fourteen. We lied about our ages and never told our parents. I think my mom did eventually find out, but I had to remove it after several months due to infection. This was very much inspired by the movie Thirteen.
This was my room in 2005. Look at that dinosaur of a computer and TV! I remember burning so many CDs on that computer. There are also a bunch of Beanie Babies above my bed, and one of those rotating aquarium lights on my dresser. The memories! If you could see the other side of my room, you'd see my poster wall, which included posters of Fall Out Boy, Jesse McCartney, Drake Bell, Hilary Duff, JoJo, Kelly Clarkson, and more.
If you're wondering what I looked like back then, well here you go. The duck face, the peace sign, the high angle... definitely a millennial. If you could see my outfit, you would also see that I had on a top and two layers of tank tops under that cardigan. We really loved layers back then. I thought that outfit was peak fashion at the time.
The younger generation is now obsessed with the 2000s, especially the fashion. I don't think a majority of young folks get it right when they try to recreate the fashion of this era. I have seen some that are spot on, but many of them think we wore Juicy Couture every day, or that everyone had a Louis Vuitton purse. I had a knock off Walmart velour tracksuit that I wore ocassionally, and of course my colorful hearts bag in place of a Louis Vuitton. The truth is, most days we wore flared low rise jeans or foldover yoga pants with two or three layers of tank tops under a top. In colder months we wore a zip-up hoodie over it, or a white puffy jacket with a fur trimmed hood. Our shoes were mostly skater shoes or ballet flats. We also wore jeans and leggings underneath mini skirts... which wasn't as cute as we thought.
Most of us weren't dressing like our idols Paris Hilton or Lindsay Lohan. The normal everyday wear was less exciting, but I still love all the silly outfits I wore back then. It was a simpler time. Even though we had cell phones, they were difficult to text on and calling was expensive. We mostly used them for emergencies. I would use my house phone to call people, then we would meet up and go to the mall or movie theatre. I was always out and socializing. I didn't have internet until 2007, so I didn't spend much time online. Even when I got the internet, I mostly used it to download music (remember Limewire?), update my MySpace profile and check on my Piczo site. Technology is so accessible now that we have a whole computer in our pockets and internet almost everywhere we go. Its both good and bad... I think this era was the perfect time to be a teen.
